Softricity to Softgrid to MDOP and eventually MAV – Transition Path

I have had 2 emails on Softgrid <now Microsoft Application Virtualisation MAV>so please see below the transition path and new offerings

SoftGrid is split into 2 options

Softgrid CAL for TS and Softgrid for Windows Desktops <MAV>

I want to be completely clear on this from the outset, SoftGrid for Windows Desktops is now part of MDOP offering and requires Windows OS + Software Assurance per device

Lets look at Softgrid for TS Transition Plan first

Softgrid CAL for Terminal Services 4.1

Volume Licensing customers who meet the criteria below are eligible for complimentary Softgrid CALs for Terminal Services as described below:

These terms apply unless conversion terms are otherwise stated in a previous agreement.

The right to access licensed software under the complimentary CALs is in place of access rights under the qualifying license.  A customer’s access of licensed software under the complimentary CALs is subject to the terms and conditions of the customer’s license agreement and the product use rights for the Softgrid CAL for Terminal Services.  Rights under the complimentary CALs expire when the rights under the corresponding qualifying licenses expire.

In lieu of the version licensed under the complimentary CAL, customers may use an earlier Microsoft or Microsoft subsidiary version of the software.

For any version prior to Softgrid CAL for Terminal Services v4.1, media may not be available through volume licensing.

  • Customers who acquired qualifying licenses after July 17, 2006 may enroll their complimentary licenses into SA by the later of April 1, 2007 or 90 days from the date that the qualifying licenses were purchased.
  • Customers with an active Softricity maintenance agreement as of July 17, 2006 may enroll their Softgrid CAL for Terminal Services licenses into SA by the later of April 1, 2007 or 90 days from the expiration of their Softricity maintenance agreement.

SoftGrid for Windows Desktops <MAV> Transition Path

Softgrid for Windows Desktops is ONLY available through MDOP, it is also not called SofGrid anymore, its now MAV

Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack for Software Assurance (MDOP) is an optional purchase available only to those customers who have Software Assurance on their Windows Desktop.  Therefore, customers must have Windows SA coverage for each desktop for which the subscription is licensed.

All customers with active Software Assurance Membership in any pool between July 1, 2007 and December 31, 2007 may use the latest version of the Microsoft System Center Desktop Error Monitor component of MDOP during the remaining term of their Software Assurance coverage.  This component may be used only on desktops and servers covered with Software Assurance. Customers’ use of this component is subject to the product use rights for MDOP and the terms and conditions of their agreement

Transition from Softricity

Customers who meet the following criteria are eligible for one complimentary license to use MDOP software:

  • Purchased the perpetual SoftGrid for Desktop license from Softricity, Inc. after July 17, 2006 or have active Softricity, Inc. Software Assurance coverage for perpetual SoftGrid for Desktop
  • Have active Software Assurance coverage for the Windows desktop operating system

Customers who meet the following criteria are eligible for two complimentary license to use MDOP software:

  • Purchased the concurrent SoftGrid for Desktop license from Softricity, Inc. after July 17, 2006 or have active Softricity, Inc. Software Assurance coverage for concurrent SoftGrid for Desktop
  • Have active Software Assurance coverage for the Windows desktop operating system

This offer expired December 31, 2007. Customers’ use of MDOP software under this offering is in place of Softgrid for Desktop.

The complimentary MDOP licenses are subscription licenses that expire upon expiration of the corresponding Windows Software Assurance. Customers who renew their Windows Software Assurance coverage before December 31, 2009 (with no lapse in coverage) may continue to use MDOP during that renewal term until January 1, 2010. Continued use of MDOP on and after that date requires a new MDOP subscription.

Customers’ decision to use MDOP in place of Softgrid under this offer is final. Customers who make that decision forfeit any ongoing right to use Softgrid upon the expiration of their MDOP subscription. Customers’ use of the MDOP software under this offering is subject to the terms and conditions of their license agreement and the product use rights for MDOP.

Note: Microsoft SoftGrid CAL for Terminal Services license not included

Note: MDOP licenses do not include a SoftGrid CAL for Terminal Services. These must be acquired separately.

Desktop Standard GPOVault/Microsoft Advanced Group Policy Management (AGPM)

For desktops covered by MDOP licenses, the MDOP subscription will include GPOVault as of January, 2007.  Customers who license MDOP may acquire a license key from DesktopStandard for use of GPOVault until the release of AGPM (estimated to be mid-2007).  AGPM will replace GPOVault as a component of MDOP. The right to use GPOVault under MDOP licenses expires on the earlier of expiration of the MDOP license or December 31, 2007.
